The End-of-Life Care at King’s Mill Hospital has maintained its status as being rated ‘Good’ for how it treats patients with exceptional compassion, kindness, dignity and respect in a report issued by regulators.

The service was rated ‘Good’ overall with ‘Outstanding for Caring’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), who are the independent regulators of health and adult social care services in England.

The report sharing the outcome of that inspection, which took place on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 May 2026, was published by the Commission on Friday 23 October, 2026.  The full report is available here.

In their report, inspectors demonstrated a number of key strengths, with effective systems in place to support patient safety, safeguarding, staffing and multidisciplinary working. Care plans were up to date, personalised and responsive to individual needs, supporting positive outcomes for patients and those important to them.

Staff consistently provided exceptionally compassionate, dignified and respectful care, building trusting relationships and supporting patients’ physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Patients were actively involved in decisions about their care, had access to clear information and felt confident that their feedback was welcomed and acted upon. Strong leadership also supported an open, inclusive culture, with effective oversight through regular audits and quality checks.

Executive Chief Nurse at Sherwood Forest Hospitals, Philip Bolton, said: “We are extremely proud that the Care Quality Commission has recognised the quality of care provided by our teams with an overall ‘Good’ rating with ‘Outstanding for Caring’. It reflects the dedication and compassion of our colleagues and their continued commitment to providing safe, effective and person-centred care.

“The report recognises the positive experiences of patients and families, as well as the challenges facing NHS services. We will now build on the strengths identified and use the CQC’s feedback to support our ongoing work to improve care and patient experience.”

King’s Mill Hospital is part of Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which also runs the county’s Newark and Mansfield Community Hospitals with Newark End of Life care services also being rated ‘Good’ with ‘Outstanding for Caring’ in April, this year.

The site is a long-established part of the local community, offering a range of urgent and emergency care services, outpatient clinics, diagnostic tests, therapy services, surgical and medical same day emergency care procedures, emergency and elective operations, inpatient wards, rehabilitation and end of life care services.
