The ACCU team

Whilst being cared for in Critical Care there is a large Multi-Disciplinary Team who each play a vital role in treating patients. Here are a few examples:

  • Clinical Psychologist - The psychologist helps if you feel anxious or low in mood when in the hospital. They may also follow you up after discharge home if you are troubled by memories of, or flashbacks to, your time in Critical Care.
  • Complex Patient and Family Liaison Team - The specialist nurses provide advice and support to patients and their relative’s during their time in critical care. They are available Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm. You can leave a message for them to contact you by calling 07584 331934.
  • Consultant – A consultant leads the adult critical care team and is supported by speciality doctors, doctors in training and ACCPs (Advanced Critical Care Practitioners).
  • Dietician – During critical illness a person’s nutritional needs can change daily. Dietitians monitor these changes and adapt nutritional plans to meet an individual’s needs.
  • Nurses - Care is often provided on a one nurse to one patient or one nurse to two patient basis, subject to how critically ill and unwell your relatives is. Health care assistants (HCA’s) are a vital part of the nursing team on ACCU; they work alongside qualified nurses to provide care for your relatives.
  • Occupation Therapist – An Occupational therapist aims to optimise quality of life and functional independence by addressing physical, cognitive, psychological, and social needs.
  • Physiotherapist – All patients will be assessed by a physiotherapist daily and treated as necessary with chest and limb physiotherapy.
  • Pharmacist – The pharmacist monitors the effect of medicines on patients and ensures the unit has a sufficient supply of medicines.
  • Speech and Language Therapist – Some patients have trouble with speech and swallowing during their recovery, the speech and language therapist can assess and provide support to overcome any issues.
  • Ward Domestics – Responsible for cleaning the ward.
  • Housekeeper - who maintains a clean and tidy environment, ensuring all areas are stocked and well maintained.
