Bereavement and Medical Examiners Services

We are here to help following the death of a loved one. Our service is conducted over the phone, and therefore you will not be required to attend the hospital to collect your friend or relative's death certificate.

Please call the Bereavement Services on the next working day after your friend or relative has passed away and the team will explain the process.

Where to find us

The Bereavement and Medical Examiners office is located at King's Mill Hospital through the main entrance and left into the King's Treatment Centre (KTC), then right just after the Daffodil café. The department is located close to the MRI unit. You can also follow signs for the Bereavement Centre from the Main Entrance.

The role of the Bereavement centre

Our role is to support relatives and friends through the legal process of registration of death. The department is comprised of the Bereavement Centre and the Medical Examiners Office.

The Bereavement Service will facilitate the practical arrangements for your friend/ relative - this will include liaising with the Medical Examiner and Doctors at the hospital who cared for them to facilitate the completion of the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD).

If you are with a relative or friend at the time of their death, you should receive the “With Sincere Sympathy, Support for relatives and friends” booklet.  Please read this booklet carefully, as it will help you navigate the process that takes place following a death.

Viewings

Relatives requesting an opportunity to view their deceased relative should contact the Bereavement Centre to make an appointment.

This is only available to families whose loved one has died at Kings Mill Hospital as we do not have facilities at our Newark or Mansfield Community Hospital sites.

You must be either classed as Next of Kin or are a member of the immediate family, such as a parent, child or sibling.

Viewings can take place in the Hospital Chapel of Rest at Kings Mill Hospital, by calling 01623 422702, or 01623 622515 extension 4189 or 4190, and are by appointment only from 10.30am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays).

In the case of an emergency (normally within the first 24 hours), there is also an on-call service, which is accessible via the Hospital main number 01623 622515. Please ask to speak to the on-call mortuary technician who will arrange a time for viewing. It is advised that more distant family members or friends view at the Funeral Director’s Chapel, but for those who need to see the deceased at the Hospital, permission from the Next of Kin will be required.

Viewing appointments are normally for 30 minutes from the agreed time. If for any reason you feel you may be arriving late for your scheduled appointment please let us know as soon as possible, as alternative arrangements may need to be made.
