Cardiology

Our cardiac nursing services are set up to help provide specialist cardiac care at the point of admission for patients. The team comprises Cardiologists, Cardiac Physiologists, Radiographers, and Nursing staff.

Heart Failure Nurse Service

Patients are seen in the emergency assessment unit or while staying on a cardiology or medical ward, with the aim of providing a service that will direct patients to the correct clinical pathway, promote effective, evidence-based treatment, and reduce the overall hospital stay.

When discharged from the hospital, patients will be referred to the most appropriate primary care team for symptom management, monitoring, and support. The GP can now refer patients with symptoms of heart failure to a diagnostic One Stop Heart Failure clinic at King's Mill Hospital.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Service

This Cardiac Rehabilitation Service is delivered by three specialist nurses and an exercise physiologist. This service is offered to:

  • patients with a diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) (Heart Attack and Unstable Angina),
  • patients who have had Elective PCI (Percutaneous coronary Intervention),
  • patients pre and post heart surgery and post insertion of a cardiac device (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator ICD and CRTD Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Defibrillator),
  • and those with a diagnosis of stable heart failure.

The team provides support and guidance to patients and their loved ones to help them understand and manage their condition and treatment, and to help guide their recovery following a cardiac event, surgery, or procedure.

They aim to support the patient to resume their normal life as much as possible, addressing physical and psychological recovery, and also to support patients in adopting healthy lifestyles. They assess and monitor patients on an individual basis and guide as appropriate, in addition to providing a group exercise programme and group education sessions. The team can also refer or signpost patients to appropriate services within the community or online to support them on their journey.

Chest Pain Nurse Service

Patients admitted to the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) or emergency care, with cardiac chest pain may be seen by the Chest Pain Nurses. They will review symptoms, test results, and treatment and liaise with the on-call cardiologist. Patients will be referred for further investigations as appropriate.

The Chest Pain Nurses also run the Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic (RACPC), which is for the assessment of patients with new-onset anginal chest pain to assess the need for ongoing management and treatment. They also run the post-ACS (Acute Coronary Syndrome) clinic to review all patients post-heart attack and stent. They are also involved in multiple areas of cardiac imaging and diagnostics, supporting patients through their diagnostic journey.

Arrhythmia Nurse Service

The purpose of the service is to provide advice and support to patients and their carers who have an arrhythmia, or following the fitting of a complex device. The service is available during the hospital stay or following discharge home.
