Endoscopy Suite

We have spacious and bright endoscopy suites at both King’s Mill and Newark hospitals. There is also a Mobile Endoscopy Unit at King's Mill Hospital, which you may be directed to when attending your appointment at the main unit.

We are JAG Accredited, which means that our Endoscopy suites operate to the highest standards.

There are a total of five procedure rooms where we are able to examine the upper gastrointestinal tract (stomach), lower gastrointestinal (bowel), lung and bladder with an endoscope. An endoscope is a long, thin, flexible tube with a light source and a video camera. Images of the inside of the body are then relayed to a television screen.

Endoscopy services are usually provided as day case procedures, with patients recovering in our light and airy recovery areas without the need for an overnight stay in hospital. After procedures are completed, patients are transferred to the recovery area where light refreshments are offered and test results explained.

Patients can be referred to the service by their GP or a healthcare professional.

Patient Information

You should receive a patient information leaflet when your healthcare professional discusses your procedure with you. You may also receive a copy with your appointment letter. If you have any queries about your procedure, please contact your healthcare professional.

For some procedures, you may be asked to prepare by either starving (upper GI procedures) for a few hours or by taking bowel preparation (lower GI procedures). Your healthcare professional will advise you on what to do. It is important that you follow the instructions carefully.

If you would like the information leaflet in a different language or an easy-to-read format, please let the Endoscopy Department know.

Bowel Cancer Screen Programme at King's Mill Hospital

The Bowel Cancer Screening Programme at King's Mill Hospital is run from The Hub at Nottingham University Hospitals.

You can view this video about a patient's journey through bowel cancer screening.

Patient Involvement

We value your opinion and insight into the environment we have created in our endoscopy units, the suitability of the information we provide to patients, and the quality of the services we provide.

We are keen to involve our patients in developing our service. We welcome patients to visit the endoscopy department for an individual or group chat with our ward leader or one of her deputies.

If you are interested in becoming part of our Patient Representative team, please contact the Endoscopy Ward Leader by calling 01623 622515 extension 3067, or emailing sfh-tr.endoscopypatientinvolvement@nhs.net
