Respiratory medicine

Respiratory medicine is a large department at Sherwood Forest Hospitals, and concerns the investigation and management of lung disease.

The Respiratory Medicine team supports:

  • Inpatient services – Wards 21 (RSU), 43 and 44.
  • Outpatient clinics at King’s Mill and Newark Hospital.

We manage various conditions, including:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Lung cancer
  • Interstitial lung disease / pulmonary fibrosis
  • Pneumonia
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Tuberculosis
  • Pleural disease (pleural effusion and pneumothorax)
  • Sleep disordered breathing (including obstructive sleep apnoea).

We provide cardiorespiratory investigations through our dedicated physiology team, including lung function testing and cardiopulmonary exercise testing, as well as sleep studies and support for people using CPAP and NIV machines.

We also perform procedures including bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, and lung biopsies.

We have close links with other departments, including:

  • The Outpatient Intravenous Antibiotics (OPAT) team
  • The Tobacco Dependence team
  • Thoracic Oncology and Thoracic Surgery at Nottingham University Hospitals
  • Regional Multi-disciplinary Team meetings (MDTs) for Severe Asthma and Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD).
