Travelling to work
As part of the Trust’s commitment to sustainability and climate action, we offer several eco-friendly travel options for you to get to work and we encourage you to utilise these where suitable.
There is limited parking on site and we ask that those who are able, do not drive to our sites. The hospitals are easily accessible by public transport. We have our own bus stops at King's Mill Hospital and bus stops outside Newark Hospital and Mansfield Community Hospital. There is also easy access to our sites by bicycle and foot.
Working closely with Travel Choice we provide active travel routes to our sites, free cycle training, Dr Bike maintenance events and EV charging points.
You can find a handy journey planner at Travel Choice, where you can plan your cycle, walk, bus or train journey to work.
The website also provides details of car share schemes in your area.
Walking or running to work is a great option if you live locally.
The King’s Mill Hospital site also benefits from being across from King’s Mill reservoir, which is a great site for a 40-minute lunch time walk, or jog.
There are facilities at our sites for showering and changing, which you can find information on further down the page.
While there are no rules against wearing your uniform on your journey to work, please remember that you are representing the Trust when wearing this.
The main pedestrian access points to our sites are:
King's Mill Hospital:
- King's Mill Road East
- Sutton Road
- Wilmore Way.
Newark Hospital:
- Boundary Road
- Bowbridge Road.
Mansfield Community Hospital:
- Stockwell Gate.
You can also join the Sherwood Forest Hospitals virtual exercise group on Facebook to share your progress, who run regular exercise challenges for you to take part in.
While there are no rules against wearing your uniform on your journey to work, please remember that you are representing the Trust when wearing this.
Cycling facilities
We have secure lockers for bicycles on our sites.
King's Mill Hospital
The main cycling sheds can be found near the Education centre, behind the renal unit.
The What3words reference is dare.food.honey.
The hospital provides a secure facility with bike racks and a door locking system that requires a 4-digit code, which can be obtained by contacting wesley.burton@nhs.net. Once you have the code you can open the box which provides access to the padlock key.
Please be mindful of others when using the facility and store locks that are not in use on the wire fencing around the facility rather than on the bike racks. If you are planning on leaving SFH permanently, then please take your lock when you leave the Trust.
There are further cycle racks available, including a covered racking system just outside the main entrance to the hospital. The What3words reference is dent.slap.point.
Newark Hospital
There are two cycle storage facilities at Newark Hospital.
- To the left of the main entrance there are two covered areas with facility to lock your bike to a secure structure.
- There are also cycling facilities near the goods receipt building.
Bicycle maintenance
Nottinghamshire County Council offer a programme of Dr Bike events in Mansfield, Ashfield and Worksop where you can get your bike checked over by a trained cycle maintenance professional.
Book a session on the Travel Choices website.
Cycle to Work Scheme
The Cycle to Work Scheme is a Government backed initiative that enables you to obtain a bike and/or cycling accessories to use for riding to work and the monthly cost is paid for via salary sacrifice.
A salary sacrifice happens when you give up the right to receive part of your salary due. The salary sacrifice enables you to pay back the loan on your bike, accessories and safety equipment from your gross rather than net pay (before tax and National Insurance contributions are removed) for the hire period, allowing you to benefit from income tax and NI relief which is where savings are accrued.
The maximum package value could be up to £10,000.
Typical savings on the scheme can be up to 40% for basic rate tax payers, and 49% for higher rate tax payers, but the actual amount you pay depends on your personal tax band.
For more information, see the Vivup website.

Travel by train
The closest train stations to King's Mill Hospital and Mansfield Community Hospital are:
- Mansfield train station
- Sutton Parkway train station
Mansfield Train station is next to the bus station where you can get buses to Mansfield Community or King’s Mill hospital every ten minutes. It is also a nine-minute walk to Mansfield Community Hospital.
If travelling to Sutton Parkway you can find a bus stop on Low Moor Road, a few yards away from the station entrance.
The closest train stations to Newark Hospital are:
- Newark Castle train station
- Newark Northgate train station.

As the train stations sites are not within walking distance to the hospitals, we would advise using public transport to continue your journey to the hospital.
Given the high number of patients, visitors and staff attending our sites on a daily basis, there has been increasing pressure on the availability of car parking spaces.
Therefore, where possible, we encourage you not to drive to our sites.

Staff who wish to park in a visitor car park at any time must pay visitor parking fees or risk receiving a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).
