Q.1 How do I join the Library?
A.1 Membership is free and open to all NHS staff in Midlands and East. To register at one of the libraries simply show your staff identification and fill in a membership form. You can download a form now and email it back to us.
Q.2 When are you open?
A.2 The main library at KMH is staffed during office hours, Monday-Friday. Access to resources outside staffed hours is available via the trust swipe card system. Newark Library is mostly self-service, but a member of the team visits at least once a month. You will need to obtain the key code to access the Library.
A.3 Your loan entitlement is dependent on your membership status. Fifteen items are permitted for NHS staff members and students on placement. The loan period will be for 4 weeks. This will be indicated on each item. We also have an annual loan for items that are specific to a particular department.
A.4 All items may be renewed in person, by telephone or e-mail three times. Please note that after the initial loan period (4 weeks) an item may be recalled when reserved for another reader, at any time. There may be restrictions on items obtained for you via the inter library loan system.
A.5 Yes. The main email address is firstname.lastname@example.org To request a service from us download the appropriate form and attach it to your email.
A.6 There are no charges to borrow resources. All users are charged a fine of 30p per item per day for items that are overdue. The charges for printing and photocopying are displayed in the Library, but to copy an A4 page is 5p per copy (black) and 25p (colour). We may also make a charge for obtaining items from other libraries.
A.7 Any loan item can be requested and sent to your work base or held for collection. This can be done by contacting the library or by logging on to our Online Catalogue, locating the item and clicking either the Reserve or Place booking button. Bookings can be made if a resource is required for a particular event or date. You can also pre-book our study rooms. For items not held in our libraries, it may be possible for the library to obtain these via our Document Delivery and Inter Library Loan service. Suggestions for stock to purchase are always welcome.
A.8 The self-issue of loan items is available at KMH library outside staffed hours for registered members. Please be aware that there are CCTV and alarm systems. You can also return items and pay any fines too!
A.9 The library subscribes to a number of key electronic resources. To find out what is available you will first need to obtain an OpenAthens username and password. Go to the NHS Evidence website and login. Click on the link to My resources to see an alphabetical list of resources. However, the best place to start is our new Discovery Search. Enter the title of the book or journal and then use the filter options on the left to refine your search. Tip: Try limiting to fulltext and then source type e.g. eBooks
A. 10 Some of our electronic resources are available via sites specifically tailored for users of mobile devices, for example EBSCO databases. You can access the platform specific to mobile devices here: http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?authtype=athens&profile=emobile
BMJ Best Practice has an award winning app. You need to set up a personal account and then search for the app in the App store or Google Play.
There are also a number of free health related applications available for mobile devices. You can find a list of approved apps on the NHS Health Apps Library or download our guide to Mobile Apps for Healthcare.
A.11 The library offers a series of training and induction sessions as part of its Information Skills Programme contact the library for courses and dates. To book a session you will need to use the Online Course Booking on the Intranet. Courses can be delivered at Newark Hospital on request.
A. 12 You can use this form to request a search. Simply complete all the sections and email or send it to the library. We will usually respond to your request in 5-10 working days. If your request is complicated or time-consuming, we may need to contact you again to discuss how and when your request can be answered.
