Patient information leaflets
Musculoskeletal (MSK)
These leaflets are for patients under the care of the Musculoskeletal (MSK) service.
Patient information
Achilles tendinopathy
The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone and helps you to push up on your tiptoes. Overuse of this tendon can result in inflammation and irritation in the tendon; this is known as Achilles tendinopathy.
Anterior knee pain
Anterior knee pain is a term used to describe pain at the front of the knee and is often referred to as an overuse injury.
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition where the nerve becomes compressed, restricted or irritated where it passes through the wrist.
Frozen shoulder
Frozen shoulder is a very painful condition that means your shoulder is stiff and painful. Everyday tasks like getting dressed.
Golfer's elbow
Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis/medial epicondyle pain) is a condition that causes pain around the inside of the elbow. It usually affects the dominant arm.
Heel pain (plantar fasciitis)
Often caused by sudden increase in load of the foot by doing more standing, walking or physical activity than your foot is used to.
Hip osteoarthritis (OA)
Osteoarthritis (OA) is often shortened to arthritis. It can happen in lots of joints in the body and it is a normal part of the ageing process.
MSK service leaflet
The MSK Together service is a unique partnership of health organisations across Mansfield, Ashfield, Newark, and Sherwood.
Knee osteoarthritis (OA)
Osteoarthritis (OA) is often shortened to arthritis. It can happen in lots of joints in the body and it is a normal part of the ageing process.
Lateral hip pain
Lateral hip pain is a common condition causing pain over the outside or ‘lateral’ aspect of the hip region; often it spreads to the buttock, or runs down the outside of your thigh, down to the knee. It can flare up suddenly or build up over time.
Lower back and leg pain
Sprains and strains of the back can cause ‘mechanical lower back pain’ and can sometimes refer pain and symptoms down the leg. Pain travelling down the leg from the back can be caused by stiffness and inflammation of joints in the lower back, or irritation of nerves.
Lumbar spine stenosis
Lumbar spine stenosis is a term that means the narrowing of the spinal canal in your lower back. The spinal canal is the tunnel where the spinal cord sits.
Meniscal tears
The menisci are ‘c’ shaped cartilage structures in the knee. They act like thick pads which sit between the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia). Each knee joint has an inner and outer meniscus.
Neck and arm pain
Neck and arm pain is usually caused by the joints and/or nerves that originate from the neck and travel down the arm.
Rotator cuff related shoulder pain
The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in your body. It is a ball and socket joint that allows for lots of movement involved and needed for washing, dressing and reaching.
Rotator cuff tears
The rotator cuff is a group of tendons that connect four muscles from around your shoulder blade (scapula) to the bone at the top of your arm (humerus).
Tennis elbow
Tennis elbow is a condition that causes pain around the outside of the elbow. It usually affects the dominant arm, and often occurs after overuse of the forearm muscles and tendons near the elbow.
Tibialis posterior tendinopathy
This can be a painful condition affecting the inside of your ankle around your ankle bone. It can lead to a reduction in the arch support around the inside of your foot, cause flat feet, swelling and pain.
