Transferring Patients to Other Critical Care Units.

Sometimes, patients need specialist input from other hospitals. As such, patients may need to be transferred to other parts of the region or country. We would always aim for them to come back to Sherwood Forest Hospitals to be closer to home when they have received their specialist input.

The demands on emergency hospital services can be very unpredictable. We are not immune from this and sometimes, the demand for critical care exceeds our capacity. Very rarely, we have to make very difficult decisions to continue delivering safe care and patients are sometimes identified to be transferred to ideally a neighbouring hospital’s Critical Care Unit. We are part of the Mid Trent Critical Care Network and plan to transfer locally in the East Midlands. We always endeavour to bring our patients back to our Critical Care Unit at the earliest opportunity.
